The ATI History:

Treatment designed just for you to achieve an exceptional outcome, not just an acceptable one. That’s the philosophy that motivated CEO Greg Steil when he founded ATI in 1996 and it remains at the core of everything that ATI does today.

An exercise physiologist who holds a three-time world record in power lifting and an outstanding collegiate football player, Greg established ATI with a focus on functional capacity evaluations and work conditioning/hardening for workers' compensation patients. After opening his first clinic in Willowbrook, Illinois, Greg quickly realized there was an opportunity to provide a new and unmatched level of service to injured workers in the Chicagoland area. He developed the trademarked F.I.R.S.T. ™ (Functional Integration of Rehabilitation and Strength Training) program based on extensive research and input from orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, athletic trainers, exercise physiologists, and bio-mechanists. The F.I.R.S.T program has gained international recognition for its success.

Dylan Bates, a licensed physical therapist, who now is the Company’s Chief Operating Officer, joined the practice in 1999 to expand physical therapy services. Dylan participated in collegiate athletics and shared Greg’s vision for aggressive rehabilitation through strength training and conditioning. This fueled the development of treatment protocols utilizing progressive and cutting-edge techniques.

With a winning combination of exceptional care, incredible people, and a commitment to be the bright spot in the day of every single patient, ATI Physical Therapy quickly began to expand:

2000     ATI opens its second clinic, located in Joliet, IL.

2001     To build a foundation for future growth, ATI establishes a company culture and mission statement to “exceed customer expectations by providing the highest quality of care in a friendly and encouraging environment.”

2002     Research on ATI’s F.I.R.S.T™ program is published in The Spine Journal.

Naperville, IL clinic opens.

2003     To give back to the communities where ATI’s patients and staff work and live, ATI founds the ATI Foundation, a non-profit organization benefiting children in need of resources and funding due to medical complications and disabilities.

ATI initiates the pioneering Women Serving Women program, now named ATI Women’s Health, a specialty division providing customized physical therapy treatment for health care needs unique to women.

New Lenox, IL clinic opens.

2004     The ATI Sports Medicine Program is established. The program has since grown to 125 Sports Medicine affiliations with professional, collegiate, high school and club sport athletic programs, including the Milwaukee Brewers, the Milwaukee Bucks, the Joliet Slammers and UIC.

Bourbonnais, IL and Oswego, IL clinics open.

2005     ATI expands into Wisconsin with the opening of the Waukesha clinic.

Five new clinics open.

2006     ATI is named “Best Physical Therapy Practice in the Nation” by ADVANCE Rehabilitation Magazine at the APTA’s (American Physical Therapy Association) annual conference.

With a desire to continue to expand ATI’s unique means of treatment to those in need of customized rehabilitation, ATI merges with PRO Physical Therapy, a successful 16-clinic Delaware-based company that was founded in 1995. PRO Physical Therapy’s culture and vision of unparalleled dedication to patients was complementary to ATI’s. ATI brought its knowledge of the trademarked F.I.R.S.T. and Women Serving Women programs to the East. Pro Physical Therapy shared its expertise in initiating hand, aquatic and industrial service programs to ATI.

ATI establishes a research department to provide a non-bias, objective monitoring and research center focused on evaluating the effectiveness of advanced rehabilitative care.

2007     ATI acquires Orthosport, a successful practice with a 25-year history and nine clinics in the suburbs of Chicago.

ATI opens its 50th clinic.

2008     The new ATI Corporate Office and “Center for Excellence, ATI’s new training center opens in Bolingbrook, Illinois.

2009     ATI opens its 75th clinic.

2010     ATI wins “Psychologically Healthy Workplace – National Award for Best Practices in Health & Wellness” by the American Psychological Association.

2011     ATI surpasses 100 clinics.

ATI earns Core Standards Accreditation from URAC, a Washington, DC-based health care accrediting organization that establishes quality standards for the health care industry.

ATI expands into Indiana with the acquisition of two premiere physical therapy practices: Advanced Physical Therapy in Indianapolis and APT Plus in Northwest Indiana. Two additional Northwest Indiana clinics open raising the total to 25 Indiana clinics.

ATI unveils new logo and announces plans for all divisions to adopt the ATI Physical Therapy name in 2012.
