Fifteen years ago, Maryanne and Michael Payne awaited the birth of their adopted daughter. When the time came, they were told that there were some complications at birth, and it was assumed that the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby. Shortly after birth, Christine suffered a seizure and was diagnosed with Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy. The Paynes were told they did not need to “take her” since she would likely have “issues,” but they both felt that Christine needed them as much as they needed her.
At 11 months, Christine was diagnosed with Athetoid Cerebral Palsy, described by a combination of low and spastic tone. Her movements are all or nothing. She can be docile at rest, but her frequent movements are rapid and uncontrolled. At 15 years old, she weighs only 58 pounds due to her constant movement, burning the many calories she eats daily. Christine struggles with balance, and requires the use of a helmet after suffering multiple concussions.
