Hailey
Havre De Grace, MD
Age 11
Post-Viral Acute Flaccid Myelitis from D68 Enterovirus
On September 14, 2016 Hailey was brought into the University of Maryland Medical Center’s Pediatric ICU with respiratory distress, thought to be due to her asthma.
From there, Hailey’s health declined rapidly, suffering respiratory failure requiring intubation and a week of letting machines take over the work of her heart and lungs. When she eventually showed signs of improvement, it was realized she could not move her legs. Hailey had been infected with D68 Enterovirus, a polio-like virus that can cause paralysis.
Since October, Hailey has been doing rehab where she works on eating, breathing and intense physical therapy and doctors are unclear on if she will walk again. Hailey and her family have the determination and dedication to prove them wrong.
The Katsikides family resides in a one-floor, ranch-style home with stairs leading to the house. A ramp is needed to allow her to come and go with the independence, confidence, and sense of normalcy that other 11-year-old girls have.
The ATI Foundation will provide financial assistance toward the purchase and installation of a ramp to the entrance of their family home.
