Joey Bates
Scappoose, OR
Age 10
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
Joey was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy on December 10, 2010 at the age of 4. This form of Muscular Dystrophy is one of the most severe, as it deteriorates all muscles including those related to vital organs.
Most children with DMD are in a wheelchair by age 10, and most don’t live past age 20. Joey is now in a power wheelchair and because of this, he and his parents and two older brothers have recently moved from their life-long home to a wheelchair-accomodating home.
Every six months, the family travels to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital for Joey's specialized treatment at an estimated expense of over $3,000 each trip for airfare, hotel, food, etc. This biannual evaluation by a world-renowned specialist and her team of medical professionals is critical in determining Joey’s current medical status and future care.
The ATI Foundation will provide financial assistance that will help cover these travel expenses for his specialized care.
