Nicholas
Swarthmore, PA
Nicholas is 6 years old and lives in Swarthmore, PA. He has Lennox-Gestaut Syndrome. Nicholas was the 2014 Holiday Kids Campaign beneficiary for the Pennsylvania region. The ATI Foundation purchased a Rifton Blue Wave bath chair for Nicholas, and donated money toward the purchase of a wheelchair-enabled van.
Nicholas lives with a debilitating condition that causes him to endure at least 10 seizures a day, not counting those that are not outwardly visible. On more than one occasion, the seizures have been considered uncontrollable, and the resulting respiratory distress has brought him to emergency room. Along with Lennox-Gestaut Syndrome, he has been diagnosed with global developmental delays, hypotonia (low muscle tone) and an autistic disorder.
Functionally, Nicholas is dependent in all areas. He is fed through a stomach tube due to swallowing issues, requires support to maintain a seated position, demonstrates frequent and involuntary movements, and is unable to crawl or walk. Nicholas is non-verbal, but is able to show pleasure and displeasure through facial expressions and non-verbal vocalizations.
At forty-four pounds, it is becoming more difficult to transfer him from one position to another. His inability to arch backwards at the trunk, along with his weight and movement, all contribute to a dangerous situation.
Though his needs are numerous, Nicholas would particularly benefit from a Rifton Blue Wave bath chair. This will allow for a safer bathing environment for both him and his caregivers. With limited resources and a recent job loss, the family is unable to afford the $735 equipment at this time.
