The 1st Annual ATI Metal Walk was a success raising over $40,000 for the ATI Foundation to support children with physical impairments. The chilly weather didn't dampen spirits, as slightly over 500 people participated by walking, celebrating and volunteering at the event held April 28th along Chicago's Lakefront.
The walk celebrated a return to movement by people with orthopedic implants and the dedication of the medical staff that helped them regain a normal and active life.
Chicago singer Jim Cornelison kicked off the event with a stirring rendition of the National Anthem. ATI Foundation beneficiary Megan Grygiel led the walkers through a giant metal detector to start the walk. Megan, who underwent a knee and partial femur replacement to treat bone cancer, completed the full 5K walk with family, friends and her physical therapy team from ATI Shorewood.
For participants with metal implants, completing the 1K or 5K was a rewarding experience and validation that they can overcome debilitating pain and enjoy physical activities.
“The Metal Walk was an awesome experience. I feel very accomplished that I was able to finish. I was very happy to see some of the people there who helped me through my therapy. I could not have participated in this event without their help and encouragement after my knee replacement in 2010,” said Gail Koch, who underwent therapy as ATI Naperville East.
Walkers were greeted with high fives and cheers as they crossed through the giant metal detector at the finish line. After the race, participants enjoyed entertainment by Chicago cover band Hi Infidelity and refreshments. Thanks to our various event sponsors, orthopedic implant recipients, friends, supporters and individual donors to the event.
The Premier Sponsor of the ATI Metal Walk was Hinsdale Orthopaedics. Additional sponsors include Remline, Salzaider Family Charity, Chicago Center for Orthopedics at Vanguard Hospital, Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, OAK Orthopedics and Single Path.
